Harness Equipment That Keeps the Horses Running

The harness is a unique piece of equipment endemic to the sport of harness racing. The harness is worn by standardbreds, the horses of harness racing, and it is kept from slipping off by a Buxton martingale, which allows the horse to propel the cart, or sulky, forward down the racetrack.

The harness is to harness racing what the engine is to auto racing. The harness is a piece of equipment that is outfitted onto a racehorse for the purpose of harness racing. Harness racing is an American sport dating back to the early 19th Century, and it has always rivaled its older brother, thoroughbred racing, for the attention and dollars of the American public.

There are many differences between harness racing and thoroughbred racing, but there are a number of similarities, as well. Both are horses, albeit different breeds, which are bred and raised to race. They both compete against similarly bred horses, so that the competition is fair and keen. Both compete for the horse racing betting money of the public, and both harness and thoroughbred racing do a bang-up job of creating a public interest in their racing acumen.

The harness is an integral part of equipment in the sport of harness racing. The harness and bridle are worn by harness racing horses, called standardbreds, and the harness is kept in place by another piece of equipment called the Buxton martingale. The standardbreds race in a sulky, or racebike. The sulkies are light carts with two wheels that are propelled by the strength of the standardbreds down the racetrack. The sulky is attached to either side of the harness and the rider or, in the case of harness, the driver of the sulky, is right in back of the horse. The sport of harness racing is extremely popular in parts of the Eastern United States, with the harness as that piece of equipment that holds the industry together.
