Harness Racing Popular Among the Working Class

Harness racing is popular with the working class, because they identify with the standardbred horse as hard working and successful despite encumbrances. Harness racing is a popular bet among horse racing fans.

Ordinary people identify with the elements of harness racing because it involves hard working animals doing their best every time they perform on the track. To the working person, it may seem that the thoroughbred horses that race on the glamorous stages of such historic racetracks as Churchill Downs, Belmont Park, Pimlico Racetrack, and Saratoga Racetrack are pampered and spoiled by the crowd that caters to them.

Thoroughbred horses do their racing basically unencumbered and are built for speed and show. Harness racing horses are the standardbred horses that have quite a few encumbrances to their races. First of all, they are not ridden as in the case of thoroughbred racing. Standardbred horses are driven. They are driven with a racebike attached to a harness, and they propel the racebike, its driver and sulky forward on a track much like the mule would carry the supplies in the old days of the Wild, Wild West in the United States. How could the common man not identify with this standardbred horse that races burdened, without privilege, much in the same way that the common folk go about their daily routine in life?

Furthermore, the harness racing standardbred is further encumbered in that he can not simply dash to the finish line as the thoroughbred racing horses do. The standardbred horse in harness racing must proceed along the track in either a trot or a pace. If the horse in harness racing goes out of step, he must pull up immediately and get back into stride or be disqualified. Now you know why the harness racing sport is very popular among the working people!
