The Belmont Stakes race is also well known as the "Run for the Carnations" because of the blanket of white carnations given to the first place. Until 1996, the traditional song was "Sidewalks of New York."
But in 1997, the audience decided to change the theme and sing the famous New York, New York just before the call to the post. This is a tradition done in the Triple Crown races as an inauguration protocol.
